Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County

Goal: $5,000.00

Specific Need

For the first time in our 20-year history, we have had to cancel our Bowl for Kids Sake events that historically have occurred in April.  The funds raised through this event represent 25% of our budget.  Our ability to maintain and expand our one-to-one mentoring and provide ongoing match support are in jeopardy.  Our Match Support Specialists continue to interview new Bigs (virtually for the first time), enroll more Littles, and find the perfect matches for the nearly 46 Littles on our waiting list.  All from home and all through virtual conferences or email.

We believe that by engaging vulnerable youth in positive one-to-one relationships, exposing them to community partners and resources, and allowing them to set and achieve personal goals, these youth will be able to reduce further adversities and become successful citizens.

Mission

Create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Profile

The youth we serve face multiple challenges that place their future success at risk. At the time of youth enrollment, KSBBBS Match Support Specialists (professional case managers) administer a risk assessment survey with the parent/guardian that evaluates levels of risk in several areas, including Physical/Mental Health, Juvenile Justice, and Education.

Below are real-time data gathered in the last 6 months on the youth enrolled in Reno County.  The risk assessment survey results illustrate that the youth we are enrolling to be matched with an adult volunteer mentor are facing significant adversities and are truly the youth who need us most:

•67% live at or below the poverty level and 30% have a household income of under $15K

•52% report problems at school (educational, social, behavioral)

•71% have at least one family member who has had contact with law enforcement, including incarceration

•32% report some type of abuse in the home

•55% report the youth’s social life is concerning; few friends, few hobbies, being bullied, feels isolated

KSBBBS offers two types of one-to-one mentoring programs: Community-based and Site-based. The youth we serve are 5-17 in age (with the option to remain matched through young adulthood) and face various forms of adversity that include problems in school, low household income, and contact with law enforcement.
